Mr. John Olsen requested a tailor made tour for his group of 10 men from India Company. The plan is to spend a few days in the Chu Lai area looking for places they spent time back in 1966, then move farther up the coast to Danang and west to Dong Ha and finally into the jungle to climb the Hill 362 and spend one or two days on top. Operation Hastings in July and August 1966…
Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City arrival (Dinner, Guide)
Arriving at Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll be met and driven to your hotel. You’ll have time to relax after your journey before a Welcome dinner. You will then enjoy a water puppet show, an art form in which puppets are suspended over water, directed by puppet masters who must sit semi-submerged for hours at a time. The tradition of water puppetry is at least 1,000 years old, originating with peasants in the Red River Delta of the north. The puppets, which the French used to call “the souls of the Vietnamese rice fields,” are made of the water-resistant wood of the fig tree and depict villagers, farm animals, dragons, and more. You’ll spend the night in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 2: Ho Chi Minh City – Chu Lai (Breakfast, Guide in Chu Lai)
In the morning, your private car and driver arrives to take you to Tan Son Nhat airport for your flight to Chu Lai. In the afternoon, your guide will show you around Chu Lai where you and your friends were on duty. You’ll spend the night in Chu Lai.
Day 3 to day 4: Chu Lai (Breakfast, Lunch, Guide)
You’ll visit Chu Lai and spend your entire day visiting the Vietnam battlefields and historical sites around this area, including: Long Phu 1, Long Phu 2, Hill 20, Hill 502, Hill 69. You’ll spend the night in Chu Lai.
Day 5: Chu Lai – Tam Ky – Danang – Furama Resort (Breakfast, Lunch, Guide)
After breakfast, you’ll be driven to Tam Ky and then to Danang. After checking into your hotel, your guide will show you the Danang Beach and then a finish up with a quiet drink at Furama resort to finish off the day in style. You’ll spend the night at Furama Resort, located on My Khe beach.
Day 6: Danang – DMZ - Dong Ha (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Guide)
In the morning, your car and guide will take you northwards to Quang Tri Province to tour the wartime ‘De-militarised Zone’, better known as the DMZ. On the way, you’ll visit the Old Citadel of Quang Tri, La Vang Church, Con Thien Firebase and then the Doc Mieu Base. You’ll have lunch in a local restaurant in Dong Ha town. You’ll spend the night in Dong Ha town.
Day 7: Dong Ha – Hill 362 (Breakfast, Guide)
After breakfast, your car will take to what was once the Hill 362.
Day 8: Hill 362 (Breakfast, Guide)
Your time will be your own!
Day 9: Hill 362 – Dong Ha (Breakfast, Guide)
You’ll be free in the morning and return to Dong Ha in the evening. You’ll spend the night in Dong Ha town
Day 10: Dong Ha – DMZ – Furama in Danang (Breakfast, Guide)
In the morning, your route will take you to Truong Son Cemetery, Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River, as well as the Vinh Moc Tunnels (these are more authentic and easier to enter than those in Cu Chi. They have been preserved more or less in their original form). In the late afternoon, you’ll return to Danang. You’ll spend the night at Furama.
Day 11: Danang – Ho Chi Minh City (Breakfast, Guide)
In the morning, your car will arrive to drive you to the airport to board an afternoon flight to Ho Chi Minh City. When you arrive, a private car will be waiting to take you to your hotel in the city. After checking in, you’ll be free for a preliminary wander around District 1. Your overnight will be in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 12: Ho Chi Minh City – COSVN – Ho Chi Minh City (Breakfast, Guide)
A morning drive will take you to COSVN – Central Office for South Vietnam.
Day 13: Ho Chi Minh City – Cu Chi (Breakfast, Lunch, Guide)
After breakfast, your guide will take you to discover Ho Chi Minh City - Pearl of the Far East. You’ll visit the History Museum where there is a special exhibition of the 5th century ‘Oc Eo’ civilisation. (Alternatively, you’ll visit the Fito Museum (First Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) is host to a large collection of relics, including traditional Vietnamese medicinal implements, and chronicles the history of medical practice in Vietnam from 2000 BC). The Museum of War Remnants provides a very partial, but riveting, perspective of the ‘American War’: not for the squeamish! The Binh Tay market and the China Town are worth a stroll to explore the local daily life and the culture mix.
After lunch, you leave Ho Chi Minh City on an afternoon excursion for Cu Chi, situated 70km from Saigon. The Cu Chi Tunnel system was created around 1948 to assist the Viet Minh in their combat against French occupiers. Construction and enlargement continued during American bombings and they were turned into an underground city with living areas, kitchens, storage, weapon factories and field hospitals. The Cu Chi Tunnels could house up to 10,000 people who lived underground for years, getting married and raising children. During the Vietnam American War the entire area of Cu Chi was designated as a fire free zone yet was heavily bombarded. Since 1988, two sections of the tunnels are open for visitors to crawl through and better understand the war. You will spend the night in Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 14: Ho Chi Minh City departure (Breakfast, Driver Pickup)
In the morning, your private car and driver arrives to take you to Tan Son Nhat airport for your departure.
